Man has the right to choose death, says Ton Vink „suicide counsellor”, who does not encourage but informs

„Yes, this is the chair”, says Ton Vink, when asked if I am sitting in that one. Ten to fifteen percent of those taking their seats here actually end their lives by their own hands. They travel to Velp in Eastern Holland near the German border, step over the tiny fence separating the household dog and the cat, up to the study full of philosophy books, to discuss their suicide for a consultation fee of 50 euros.

„I have 100-120 clients per year from all over the Netherlands but with some of them I am in contact over the telephone. Only the most dedicated come to here. Some of them say: yes, now I am certain, others start to hesitate. Another group thinks ahead: how to calculate in future, so need be?”, says the 54-year-old father of three, philosopher, journal editor, also involved in preparing educational material for secondary school philosophy courses. It was eight years ago that he chose to join the foundation De Einder as „a suicide counsellor”. He became interested in whether man has the right to kill himself as a philosophical problem. Coming from a Catholic family – „my father interpreted religion in a more dogmatic way while my mother took a softened position” – Ton Vink calls himself an atheist but has no problem with religiosity, either. Even practicant believers turn to him and a daughter of his was baptised – at her own will. There has been no suicide history in the family.

„I am convinced that man has the right, the fundamental right to choose death. But he or she has to be aware of the consequences. I do not encourage anyone to kill himself but do not discourage, either. There are other organisations involved in that. We at De Einder are not in prevention. With my consultant collaegues we show a mirror to people. We discuss with them what kind of medication, mostly pills, such as painkillers, difficult to obtain even by prescreption, they could use to end their lives in a human way”, he says. A survey shows that those opting for medicines have an educated and relatively well-to-do background. „I discourage everyone to choose violent solutions such as jumping in front of a train, down from a tall building or hang himself. That would make other people confronted with a horrible experience, difficult to overcome.”

Ton Vinks dissolves a common misunderstanding. The 2002 Dutch euthanasia law does not give one the right to graceful death – just the right to ask for it. The doctor may refuse it and many patients are not in the position to change doctors.

Along the lines of the Amsterdam psychiatrist Boudewijn Chabot, Tonk Vink prefers talking about „auto-euthanasia” to suicide. Auto-euthanasia gives more freedom than euthanasia proper because the doctor, or anyone else, is morally acquitted. Figures in Chabot’s doctoral thesis show that each year some 4,400 people turn to auto-euthanasia in the Netherlands (3,2 percent of all deaths). 2,800 of them do it „passively”, simply by refusing to take food or drink and 1,600 people actively, in conversation with family or friends. Many of them suffer from an incurable disease and feel they are too weak to overcome it. For others loneliness is the primary motive. „Imagine to be 95. All your friends and acquiantances have already died, even your children. You feel to live in a foreign world”, mentions the counsellor an example. Conversations with young clients are an especially delicate matter and a disturbing experience. They have a future and a good chance to overcome illness. Why to leave their lives behind, then?

Whoever takes part actively in someone else’s suicide in Holland is punishable by law. It is legal to inform or even be present when the „act” is performed but in no way it is permitted to contribute. Medication must in every case obtained by the „performer”. Involvement – or the suspcicion thereof – sometimes causes trouble to De Einder’s consultants. In his capacity as counsellor Ton Vink was in correspondance three years ago with a 54-year-old lady called Mimi de Kleine, who chose to commit suicide twelfe years after the death of her only daughter. The police found the letters and opened an investigation. The prosecutor had demanded an eight-month imprisonment – out of which five months on probation – but Vink was eventually acquitted in January 2007.

A portrait of 18
th century Scottish philosopher David Hume hangs on the wall in the Velp study. He dedicated an essay to the subject of suicide and Ton Vink dedicated his doctoral thesis to Hume. So hangs there a portrait of the humanist doctor Albert Schweitzer. From time to time mourning cards are delivered by the postman.

Másoknál a magány a meghatározó ok.
A rendőrség megtalálta a leveleket, s eljárást indított. Az ügyész nyolc hónap - ebből három letöltendő - börtönt javasolt, de idén januárban a bíró felmentette.
A velpi dolgozószoba falán David Hume, a XVIII. századi skót filozófus portréja.
